Crib Mattresses and Pads are two items that you would want to practice great care when purchasing. The reason being your child will spend a lot of time lying in his/her crib and it is essential that the mattress is of the highest quality.

As adults, we know that not all mattresses are made equal and unfortunately your child cannot tell you if the mattress is uncomfortable or hurting them. Because of this, it is especially important that you purchase a mattress that conforms to certain quality standards and specifications.

One of the important characteristics to look for is firmness. You baby would need a firm (not hard) surface to sleep on. This is especially important as your child’s figure and posture is developing at this stage in his or her life.

A good mattress should have border rods around the edges. This prevents the mattress from becoming deformed and sinking when you child starts to creep or stand on the edges of the mattress.

Another issue you may be wondering is if you should purchase a mattress with coils or foam. It actually doesn’t matter which one you choose, what does matter is that the mattress you choose is firm enough. A foam mattress tends to be less expensive than coiled ones, if you are on a budget. A new mattress is quite affordable and they generally cost in the range of $75 - $100

After you’ve bought a crib mattress, you should look at purchasing one or a few mattress pads. Using a pad has numerous benefits which include creating a softer surface for your baby to sleep on. Another benefit is that it actually protects the mattress from small spills and dust exposure. The pad will also insulate the mattress which will in turn create warmth that is soothing to your baby.
